Praça do Comércio, better known by the residents as Terreiro do Paço, was the Paço da Ribeira area until the 1755 earthquake, is one of the largest squares in Europe. BAIXA de LISBOA, Lisbon, Portugal
Downtown Lisbon, also called Baixa Pombalina or Lisboa Pombalina for being edified by Marquis of Pombal orders, after the 1755’s earthquake, covering an area of 255 hectares. It is located between the Terreiro do Paço, next to the river Tagus, and Rossio and Praça da Figueira, and longitudinally between Cais do Sodré, Chiado and Carmo, on the one hand, and the Cathedral and Castle Hill São Jorge, on the other.
