The nine islands of the Archipelago of the Azores are all volcanic origin and lie in the middle of the North Atlantic, scattered along a 600 km long strip. The islands of the archipelago were divided in three geographic groups: The Eastern Group, composed of Santa Maria and São Miguel, the Central Group integrates the islands Terceira, Graciosa, São Jorge, Pico and Faial, and the Western Group constituted by the islands Corvo and Flores.

In the central group of the Azores archipelago are the three islands of the Triangle, so close that they are at a glance from each other: Faial, Pico, and São Jorge.
